Meeker's Magic Mix

Meeker Aquaculture is located on Manitoulin Island and is a proud member of the Northern Ontario Aquaculture Association.

The Process Involved:

SPRING: Raising the nets placed underwater for the winter freezeover

FEEDING: The fish are fed throughout the growing season

HARVESTING: The nets have to be emptied so the fish can be processed

and ready for use.

How We Got To This Point:

-Over the years of growing as a business, one aspect of the aquaculture industry constantly troubled the Meekers. Along with other aquaculturalists, they had the ongoing issue of dead fish to deal with. Other local aquaculture operations had the added issue of dealing with the inedible parts of the fish that were left after processing. This waste was either trucked to a far-away facility to be disposed of, or was relegated to the local landfill where it consumed far too much valueable space. Both options are costly and wasteful. Another local waste product was also starting to be considered an environmental concern. This product was the tonnes of sawdust being created by local mills; sawdust that was being stockpiled by the acre. After a lengthy period of research and consultation, Mike developed an ingenious system of combining the two waste products to create a highly desireable soil amendment known as fish compost. Today this compost is being made around the clock following the most stringent of guidelines. As a result, millions of tonnes of waste can be diverted annually from municipal landfill sites and instead find their way to local homes and farms where they nourish the soil, and ultimately, the people.

- Our compost has undergone thorough and rigorous analysis. Our lab results have consistently shown Meeker's Magic Mix to have an average dry weight N-P-K ratio of approximately 2-1-1. There can be minor fluctuations in these values due to occasional nutrient differences in the fish and sawdust being used.

-During the composting process, all ingredients are aerated and "worked" by natural (thermophilic) bacteria and fungi at temperatures in excess of 50 degrees Celcius. The compost is then screened and refined before once again being aerated and finished. The resultant compost is monitored closely for any contaminants, pathogens and unwanted materials. Repeated testing has proven that Meeker's Magic Mix is always well below maximum accepted levels for all heavy metals and possible contaminants as established by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment. Many, such as PCB's, are completely undetectable. A close working relationship with a number of universities and government agencies has helped ensure that only the highest quality product will result from our composting process. We will readily share results of our testing with any interested person.

-It is important to note that there are no known fish diseases that are transmitable to humans. Any pathogens that may exist in the raw fish material are destroyed by the high temperatures achieved in the making of Meeker's Magic Mix.

-The best end product results from the best primary inputs. We use only fish and sawdust originating from the pristine woods and waters of Manitoulin Island! For this reason we are proud to display the "Made on Manitoulin" brand on our unique product.

-Another reason to feel good about purchasing and using Meeker's Magic Mix is that you are supporting a company that takes an active leadership role as an environmental steward. "If we can't do it safely, then we just won't do it."
