   The Process

Fish waste from Cold Water Fisheries' processing plant in Little Current and trout mortalities from other area fish farms are combined with sawdust from local sawmills and placed into two ex-cement truck mixers.

The cement drums efficiently grind up fish guts and whole carcasses within hours. A six-tonne batch is made in 24 hours. From there the mixture is poured into recycled fish pellet feed bags for storage.  Air is pumped into the bags to destroy pathogens.

During this composting process, all ingredients are aerated and "worked" by natural (thermophilic) bacteria and fungi at 65C temperatures for as long as two weeks.  Most certified composts ferment at 55C for only three days.

The compost is then screened and refined before once again being aerated and finished. After a drying out period the product is bagged and ready for use.

The compost is monitored closely for any contaminants, pathogens and unwanted materials.  Repeated testing has proven that Meeker's Magic Mix is always well below maximum accepted levels for all heavy metals and possible contaminants as established by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment.

Meeker's Magic Mix fish compost undergoes rigorous testing and analysis.  Lab results have consistently shown our fish compost to have an average dry weight N-P-K ration of 2-1-1. Minor fluctuations are possible due to occasional nutrient differences in the fish and sawdust raw materials.
