About Us:

- Meeker's Aquaculture is located on the west shore of Lake Wolsey, on beautiful Manitoulin Island. Manitoulin Island, in Lake Huron, is the largest freshwater island in the world and is considered to be one of the jewels of Northern Ontario.

- A family business, Meeker's Aquaculture has been in operation since 1987, when Mike and Sharon Meeker produced 6,000 rainbow trout from a single cage. The operation has grown since then to the point that over 300 tonnes of rainbow trout are produced annually from 18 cages. During these years of growth, they raised two sons and their home was a popular destination for the area youth who often visited to participate in activities ranging from swimming to a quick game of shinny hockey on the rough lake ice.

- Meeker's Aquaculture has become a steady source of employment for many local people. The Meekers are also deeply involved in a wide variety of community events from youth athletics to community fundraising. One of their notable efforts is in the annual award of scholarship to a local high school student pursuing an education in a science related field of study.

- In the spring of 2008, Meeker's Aquaculture is donating several tons of Meeker's Magic Mix to assist in the establishment of grass on a children's sports field being built in Wikwemikong, Ontario. Interest in Meeker's Magic Mix for this project is largely due to the safety factor as this rich compost has undergone extensive testing to ensure that no contaminants are present.

- Another activity occurring on Manitoulin Island is stream reclamation and rehabilitation. Over the years many of our streams have become degraded from a variety of causes. The result is a loss of habitat for fish and wildlife and especially a loss of spawning grounds for fish. A hardworking group of volunteers has dedicated many hours to repairing damaged areas and recreating these lost habitats. A large part of this process requires the planting of trees, shrubs, grasses and herbs alongside the streams. Donations of Meekers Magic Mix have ensured that the hard working volunteers are doing their planting into rich and well amended soil, giving the new plants a terrific start. Reports from the volunteers using Meekers Magic Mix and assessing its effectiveness have been extremely positive. Keep up the good work folks!

- One more exciting project currently underway in Northern Ontario is the regreening of Sudbury. The City of Sudbury in conjunction with Inco have been putting a great deal of effort into replacing damaged soils and replanting areas that had been left barren by past practices. Meeker's Magic Mix figures prominently in this regreening process as it is the primary compost being used in the various planting trials that have taken place. The response has been overwhelmingly positive and we anticipate a continued partnership in Sudbury's ongoing environmental efforts.
